Emily Von Rose interview
Who are you?
I’m Emily von Rose a UK based cosplayer, kind of youtuber and sometimes streamer!
What was the first cosplay?
My first cosplay was BMO from Adventure Time as it is one of my favourite shows.
How did you get into cosplay?
I actually got in to cosplay after going to MCM Manchester with my friend who is also called Emily. I just couldn’t get over all the amazing costumes and everyone just seemed so friendly and awesome and I was just like I’ve gotta get in to this! And then the next con I went to I made my BMO.
How long have you been cosplaying?
I have been cosplaying on and off for about three years.
Favourite cosplay you've done so far?
My favourite cosplay has got to be Nurse Joy as I made it all from scratch and I am still super proud of it even if I don’t wear it as much anymore.
If time/money/materials were no issue, what's the number one cosplay you'd do?
I want to do armour builds and sfx makeup! My favourite game ever is World of Warcraft and it is my dream to be able to make any armour set from the game as I have been playing it since I was 12 and I just love it. I also recently fell in love with the Witcher series and I would really love to create some of the monsters from it as I think they are amazing.
Which cosplayer would you love to work with?
I would love to work with a bunch of cosplayers such as Kinpatsu Cosplay, Kamui Cosplay, Jessica Nigri and Maul Cosplay.
Any group cosplays you'd want to do (eg Mystery Inc, Sailor Scouts, Avengers, X-Men, etc)?
I would honestly love to be in any group cosplay as I have not ever actually done one cos if I’m honest I don’t know many cosplayers that are near to me to do it with. I have always wanted to dress up as Sailor Mars so would love to do Sailor Scouts!!
Any advice for beginner or wannabe cosplayers?
It would be just to do what you want to do and don’t let any negative comments bring you down. I have recently let a lot of comments bring me down about my lewds and it inevitably (as well as other things going on) led me to completely closing my Patreon and wanting to stop cosplaying. Also, if you are setting up a Patreon make sure you budget yourself correctly as I ended up really struggling with my budgets as I was trying to create a cosplay and lewd set each month.
A few months ago, you did a rebranding from Sufinkusu Cosplay to Emily Von Rose. What prompted that?
It was initially not going to be a rebrand, it was going to be me just quitting cosplay completely. As above it was the culmination of a few things. Firstly I was really struggling with the fact that I did not feel good enough to be part of the cosplay community and I was being very critical of myself and I was just bringing myself down a lot. Secondly, I had a few issues going on with my house and my family which made it a viable time for me to take a break and re-brand. Thirdly, I set my Patreon up so I did a cosplay and lewd shoot a month and I was really really struggling with the money side of things and if I’m honest I was not being able to buy anything for myself each month other than cosplay stuff and this was something that I really needed to sort out. From this lack of money I also felt like I needed to find a more professional job and doing lewds and cosplay didn’t seem to fit in to this. Finally, I was struggling with peoples reactions to my lewds, as work colleagues found them and they were evoking reactions from them that honestly made me feel uncomfortable like people were judging me for making sexier photos, idk! It was a lot of stuff haha.
How're you settling back into the content creation routine?
I am trying to take things slower than I did previously which I still am struggling with as I did rely heavily on my Patreon for the money for my costumes as I do only work part time due to medical issues and I am going to have to build this platform back up. I honestly feel like I let a lot of people down as well and I want to prove to them that I am not gonna go on one again and delete everything! I do have a costume in the works but unsure when I will be shooting it. I am also tempted to do a Christmas themed one even though I am slightly poor from buying Christmas presents!!
On Youtube, you've started booktubing. How did you get into that?
I actually only found booktube the other day as I was looking on youtube for some book recommendations and came across the whole booktube section on there. It honestly blew my mind cos I absolutely love reading and in recent years I have stopped reading as much as I used to and this made me very sad. I don’t really know if people are in to seeing my booktube stuff alongside my cosplays but I feel like they tie in really well together.
You used to stream on Twitch, will you be making a return there?
I really do want to make a return to twitch soon. I am very much a people pleaser and found it very hard to just be like I want to play this game and this is the game I’m going to play today and ended up playing stuff I didn’t really want to stream. This is something I am really gonna have to work on when I go back in to it.
What do you like doing when not cosplaying or making content?
I love to craft and I am setting up a new candle shop on etsy at the moment where I will make themed candles from films, tv shows, books, video games etc. I also love reading, writing, playing video games and I am massively in to films.
What music are you currently listening to?
I actually just set my vinyl player back up so I am currently playing my vinyls a lot which consists of film soundtracks and Johnny Cash!
What shows are you currently binging, or have just binged?
I recently just binged Stranger Things season 2 and I absolutely adored it. I am still not over how adorable Steve and Dustin are!!
What movies/shows are you looking forward to?
I am looking forward to a hell of a lot of films Star Wars, Disaster Artist, The Greatest Showman, Three Billboards, Jurassic World (even though it looks so sad from that trailer that got released last night). TV shows of course I am looking forward to Game of Thrones and the next season of Stranger Things.
Are there any cosplays you'd love to see more people do?
I love to see sfx make up incorporated in to cosplays as it’s something I am really in to (just too poor to do myself, haha!).
If you could live in one franchise, what would it be and why?
I want to be in Stranger Things just cos it’s in the 80’s and I fancy the pants off of Steve!
Are there any small cosplayers you think deserve more attention/coverage?
I think Jayka Ann and Midori Cosplay deserve some more attention as they are the sweetest girls.
[Fiction note: I've interviewed Jayka Ann already]
Where can we find you online (social media etc)?
I've started a thread on the forum about this interview, and I'd love to hear what you think about Emily, her work and this interview!
